Following his release from the hospital, Vincent van Gogh swiftly took brush to canvas, crafting this masterpiece amidst a whirlwind of emotions stemming from the tumultuous end to Paul Gauguin’s stay in Arles. In a poignant letter penned to his brother Theo on January 23, 1889, he not only details the genesis of this painting but also lays bare his financial concerns, underscoring his pragmatic approach to his craft.
The composition captures van Gogh's fascination with the forms and colours of the citrus fruits arranged within the wicker basket, their spherical contours juxtaposed against the intricate weave of the dried sticks, all accentuated by the jagged silhouette of the cypress branches. Notably, the inclusion of blue garden gloves hints at a certain flair, infusing the scene with an air of sophistication that the artist himself acknowledged. Through bold strokes and a vivid palette, van Gogh masterfully brings to life the tactile qualities of the fruits' waxy skin, the prickly texture of the branches, and the supple folds of the worn gloves.
