In 1585 Sir Francis Drake set sail to raid Spanish colonial towns in the Caribbean, including Santo Domingo, the administrative capital of the Spanish Empire in the Caribbean, and Cartagena, one of its most prosperous cities. The voyage was part of an ongoing, but never formally declared, war between Spain and England, and was intended to disrupt colonial rule in the Americas.
This map illustrates the course of the voyage, demonstrating to contemporaries England’s emergence as a maritime power in the sixteenth century, as well as the developing empire, both through its geography, and through the representation of seemingly exotic animals.
