In 1879 Dante Gabriel Rossetti was commissioned to paint what was to be his final painting, The Day Dream, and this was the drawing that inspired it. It seems that the work began as a black chalk drawing, with coloured pastels added for the face and hands at a later date.
Rossetti wrote a poem to go with the painting, which describes the daydream causing the sitter to forget both her book and the flower she holds: 'Lo! tow’rd deep skies, not deeper than her look, She dreams; till now on her forgotten book Drops the forgotten blossom from her hand'.
